The tropical rainforest hills of Manuel Antonio vibrate to the sound of monkeys, toucans, sloths, and other wildlife, and it’s the last place you would expect to find a 5-star resort, yet this stylish contemporary hotel has been here for more than thirty years.

Newly renovated and expanded between 2014 and 2017, Makanda by the Sea is now one of the most modern hotels in the area. It’s unique architecture, expertly blends energy efficient and smart home technologies with the splendors of nature.

The hotel’s property is comprised of 12 acres, and it’s conveniently located between the secluded Biesanz beach and the famous Manuel Antonio beach and National Park. Its privileged location allows you to have adventure packed days spent visiting the many attractions of the area and still have a peaceful, secluded place to rest and enjoy life in the tropics.

If you are up for an adventure and some exercise, you can take the stair-lined path down the mountain to the beach, we must warn you though, the trail is very steep and can be challenging for some. The more convenient way to reach this beautiful white-sand beach is to take the golf cart service provided by the hotel.

This upscale boutique eco-resort features 11 spacious villas and 16 recently constructed suites and studios; all the rooms offer stylish contemporary furnishings and decorations. The villas have a full kitchen, comfortable sitting areas, and outdoor terraces with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding jungle.

The suites all have ocean views which can be enjoyed from the comfort of our private terrace, and the Honeymoon Suite has a private pool; the views from the smaller studio rooms are not as impressive but, they these rooms are conveniently located close to the infinity pool and bar.

Given that all the suites, villas and common areas are surrounded by lush vegetation, it is not unusual to encounter some of the native inhabitants of Manuel Antonio, this means you should not be alarmed if you wake up to see some squirrel or capuchin monkeys on your balcony, or a sloth slowly making its way through the canopy. Monkeys have been known to enter the restaurant, but the hotel is adamant that guests should not feed any of the wildlife, regardless of how cute they are.

The onsite restaurant is a sight to be seen, the room is open and offers some of the best views of the Pacific Ocean, built amongst the trees it almost feels as if you are dining in a luxury tree house as the decoration is something out of a magazine.

This chic restaurant uses local, seasonal ingredients produced by farmers in the Central Pacific coastal area and of course the local fishermen, this guarantees that every dish is prepared with the freshest ingredients available. The menu offers visitors a chance to taste familiar dishes in a whole different way, the chef takes inspiration from traditional recipes and adapts them to the local ingredients, effectively turning them into something you will probably never find anywhere else again.

Another wonderful amenity of this hotel is the Shanti Spa which provides several relaxing treatments in a beautifully decorated space with incredible views.
